But you know what they say—once a farmer, always a farmer. John started as a general shepherd in the '80s, worked his way up to managing Mount Lincoln station, took on a 10,000-acre farm with Landcorp, and spent nine years there. Fast forward through various roles and challenges, from Tapanui to Hokonui Farms in Mossburn, to the Southern Dairy Hub, where he got his hands dirty on a science and research farm. Then, a season in the senior management team overseeing three dairy farms and two support blocks spread over Southland and North Otago. He managed NZSF Broadacres FarmRight's large-scale runoff for a season, and then did two seasons contract milking for the New Zealand Super Fund farm, Longford FarmRight before moving to Riverside Farms in 2023.

Ray & Lis Sharp
Directors
Meet Ray & Lis Sharp, whose journey is nothing short of remarkable. Ray, a distinguished figure in Opotiki, had a formative upbringing, excelling academically and in sports. Alongside his professional pursuits, Ray was driven by a burning desire to farm the land, which led to the establishment of various farms and forestry projects. His life took a turn with his marriage to Elisabeth Mannes (Lis) in 1990, and together they successfully navigated the complexities of accountancy practice, business, farming, orcharding, and forestry. Despite personal tragedies, Ray and Lis continued to expand their business portfolio, including acquiring Tirohanga Fruit Company Limited in 1995, where they have resided since. They have two children together, Paul and Maria. Ray also has two daughters from his first marriage to Pam Brown, Elly and Liana. Over the years, with a passion for governance and with Lis’ support, Ray has actively engaged in various community roles and governance positions, displaying a commitment to the betterment of his community. Notably, he chaired the Bay of Plenty Community Trust for seven years, played a pivotal role in the development of EastPack Ltd and served as a Zespri Director. Ray has held a crucial role in an Ōpōtiki community trust as the honorary secretary of Peria Society Inc for 40 years and was a founding member of the Eastern Bay Community Foundation on which he served until 2023. Additionally, he has held significant positions in several commercial enterprises, reflecting his diverse business acumen. Ray and Lis's contributions extend internationally, as evidenced by their involvement in a dairy farm venture in Australia and in Zespri Grower tours worldwide, gaining insights into markets and kiwifruit orchards globally. Ray is a fellow of the Chartered Accountants Institute of Australia and NZ, a fellow of the NZ Trustees Association, and is an independent director of Robert Monk Transport and Ngāti Tūwharetoa Ki Kawerau. He has held independent directorships of Māori Investments Ltd and Tarawera Land Company Limited in the past. Lis's passion lies in the land as well, and she is now Company Director on over 14 different companies in forestry, dairy and horticulture. Ray and Lis's journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and a commitment to making every venture bloom.

Embarking on the Kiwi Dream:
The Tirohanga Fruit Company Journey
Armed with a vision, back in 1995 Ray and Lis Sharp purchased Tirohanga Fruit Co's inaugural property, a sprawling 30 hectares, home to a 10-canopy hectare Hayward kiwifruit orchard and the home of the Sharp family to this day. Kiwifruit was a new venture for the Sharps, who were involved in the world of beef and sheep farming, and intensive beef fattening. Continuing their growth, the Sharps and TFC delved into acquiring and developing more kiwifruit orchards during the late '90s and 2000s, including a golden legacy of over 40 hectares of gold kiwifruit across seven land blocks leased from Māori landowners at Te Kaha and Ōmaio. The leases provide that the landowners would enjoy half the orchard profits, and the orchards would return to them at the end of the 25-year leases. Despite many challenges along the way, in 2021, TFC expanded its horizons, securing majority shares in two substantial South Island farms including Riverside Farms Ltd, a strategic move to diversify their investments beyond the kiwifruit realm. Governance received a facelift too, with the introduction of independent directors, advisors, and skilled management staff, allowing Ray and Lis Sharp to gracefully retire from the day-to-day operations and enabling future business growth. Fast forward to the present, TFC encompasses management and contracting services to 15 orchards in the Eastern Bay of Plenty and they employ around 30 full-time staff and an additional 50 to 100 seasonal workers - a testament to the Sharps' unwavering commitment to turning a dream into a thriving reality. The TFC legacy is a family affair - Ray and Lis's children, Paul, Maria, and Elly, play vital roles in governance and administration, and Liana co-owns and resides on an orchard north of Tauranga.
